Does Your Dog Misbehave? Try These Training Tips!
Many people all over the world have dogs as pets. And obedient, dogs make great pets because they arefriendly and loyal. Although dogs have all of these great qualities, sometimes, they can be hard to train. The tips in the following article should help you train your dog.
Don`t punish it for doing something outside of it`s control if your dog is sick or injured. If it vomits in the house, that would normally be considered a bad action, but in the case of sickness they may not be able to control it. Instead take your pet to the vet to see if or what is wrong.
Training doesn`t only happen during designated training sessions. Every time you interact with your pup, you are training him. Make sure to stay consistent in your commands and requests and to continue to reinforce those good behaviors. Don`t let him jump up there while you are watching a show if you are training him to stay off the couch. Stay consistent at all times with what you want him to do and you will see the rewards.
If possible, dog training sessions should occur at the same time each day. Dogs, much like children, can thrive on a set schedule. This pattern will promote a learning environment in which your dog is eager to learn at the given time. Sporadic training causes confusion within your pet and can prolong the training.
Most of the time dogs and children get along wonderfully. Children, however, often tend to mimic what they hear adults doing. Don`t let your young child repetitively give commands to your dog. The dog will learn to disregard the command because they know there will be no repercussions for doing so.
When training your dog harnesses for small dogs, use the dog`s name when you want their attention. This ensures that you will have good verbal control when you go outside your home, and good verbal control is absolutely vital to responsible pet ownership. In order to dish out punishment, as this will create a negative connection, never call your dog to you.
When training your dog to deal with its fear or anxiety related behaviors, go slow. Responding to a fear or anxiety response with aggression only leads to more fear and even mistrust. Take your time and give your dog the opportunity to succeed. He will grow in confidence and reduce fear induced behaviors.
A good plan when training your dog is to keep your sessions short. When you have multiple, short sessions of training, as opposed to one long set, your dog will stay interested and will anticipate more. Keeping your pet motivated by short interval sessions will be effective and have a stronger impact.
If you are trying to prevent your dog from begging, the best thing to do is ignore the begging completely. Don`t respond either positively, with a treat or petting, or negatively, by shouting. Your dog will learn quickly and remember for a long time that the begging ended up with you paying attention to the dog.
Before feeding your dog, you should make sure to eat your own meal first. This shows your dog that you are leader of the pack and helps establish your dominance. If he or she knows that you are the boss because you eat first, your dog will be much more likely to follow your other commands.
For your dog to understand what you are punishing them for, you need to catch them misbehaving. If you reprimand a dog for something that happened hours ago, chances are your dog will not make the connection. And if you choose to ignore your dog to show that you are mad, do not ignore it for more than a few minutes.
When you are working at training your dog, positive reinforcement is everything. You need to give your dog lots of chances to get things right and then immediately reinforce that desirable behavior. You can use treats, praise or a combination of both to let the dog know how happy you are with what he just did.
You need to be aware of health issues that might cause his ability to be somewhat limited with certain things, though an older dog can learn new things. For instance, a dog that suffers from arthritis shouldn`t be made to crawl too much. Training may actually improve a dog`s mind functions, and that can be great for old dogs. However, you must make sure that you`re not causing it unwarranted pain during exercise sessions.
Finding out what motivates your dog is the key to successful training. It is also important to keep in mind that the reward you`re giving your dog should be healthy, although all dogs have different preferences and tastes. Even if the treats at the store say your dog will like it, make sure to double check the ingredients. Cheese and strong- smelling meats are very popular, but oftentimes falsely advertised at the store containing a mix artificial tastes and smells.
Use the same simple words in a low, firm tone of voice, every time you give your dog a command. Don`t shout or repeat the command multiple times. Say it then, once and firmly, assist the dog in complying if he doesn`t understand (e.g. press down firmly on the hindquarters while saying "sit," if he doesn`t sit the first time you tell him).
Dogs with separation anxiety will benefit from affection from places other than their favorite person. In other words, their favorite person should diminish attention. You should only greet the pooch when she is calm and quiet. Other people in the home should take her out and help with training sessions so she builds a comfort and relationship with others as well.
Be sure your dog knows how to behave in public and how to behave around other dogs by taking him or her to obedience classes at six months and to your local dog park on a regular basis. Another very good way to socialize your dog and build a strong bond with him or her is to get involved in agility classes or other advanced forms of dog training.
When training your dog, make sure to enforce all commands you give. Issue them once firmly and make sure your pet follows through, although do not repeat them over and over. Do not let your dog ignore a command or else he will think that you are not serious and will disregard most of the training session.
Regardless of your dog`s age, or his previous behavior problems, the advice above really can help. Patience is an essential virtue in the training process. Your dog and you will both be happier.
